P.S I Love You.
Ok so I really enjoyed the book, and was rather excited when I discovered they were doing it for the silverscreen.
Although it follows pretty much the same story as the book and is built on the same concept, it is quite different to the book. However, this doesn't really ever put me off films based on books because I tend to look at the book and the film as seperate and try not to compare them.
I'm also not usually the biggest fan of rom-coms, or romances in general because they tend to be too predictable, but I did quite enjoy this film and I'm really not sure why. It's no exceptional beauty when it comes to direction or cinematography, but I do think the acting is good, more so from the supporting cast than the leading parts.
One thing that did annoy me about this film, was the change of the setting from Ireland to America. When the characters go to visit Ireland at a couple of points in the film, it really shines through how beautiful the place it and I think it would have made for a much more visually pleasing piece if it had stayed true to the book on this particular aspect.
Back to my earlier comment on the acting.
Hilary Swank I feel didn't portray nearly enough heartache and despair and I think the character of Holly would have been feeling after the death of Gerry. I also don't think her performance
was overly believable at some points [namely the opening sequence and at the funeral].
Gerard Butler, I thought was very good - aside from an abismal Irish accent! It was good to see Mr James Marsters again, him being one of my favourite actors. Overall, I think the supporting cast were considerably better than the leading man and lady, particularly the leading lady.
This film did make me weep at points - particularly when Holly comes home from the funeral and repeadetly phones Gerry's mobile just to hear his voice on his voicemail.
So overall:
Story - 8/10 - there's not really been a romantic-comedy following the concept of a dead husband helping his wife get over the loss of him before has there?
Acting - 7/10
Soundtrack - 9/10 - I loved it. One of my favourite things about the film.
Camera Stuff - 5/10 - nothing exciting here. And I was particularly disapointed when she met Daniel at the stadium and the HUGE space they had and the potential for a beautiful shot wasn't made use of at all.
So really, looking back at this, I don't know why I enjoyed this film because as far as my critisms show, it wasn't anything special. But enjoy it I did.
That wraps up my review of P.S I Love you.
Hope you enjoyed it.
If you feel the same or differently or what ever, feel free to comment or get in touch.
Until my next time,
