I went to see this film the day after it's release and it was worth every bead of sweat me and my six accomplices shed in our attempts to gain entry into it.
Firstly, two of my friends went up to the desk and asked for their tickets. The guy insisted on asking for ID, even though we are all evidently 15 years of age. They had none on them and so he wouldn't sell them tickets. The thing that annoyed me about this was that it clearly wasn't company policy to ask for ID because another friend then went up to the other desk and got sold her ticket, no questions asked.
Then, the two friends went to the desks downstairs to buy their tickets. The people down there sold them one but wouldn't sell a second one, so they took one of their credit cards and went to buy the second ticket from a machine. Then the machine ate the card!
They came running upstairs to break the news to us, whilst I was in the queue with the remaining 4 others upstairs who sitll needed tickets. We got sold no problem from the girl server, whilst the guy who had initially rejected the first two of my friends was in the middle of asking a group of people who clearly looked about 16,17 if they had any ID. When they didn't he got every one of them, and there were about 12, to sign some forms.
Back to the credit card fiasco. So she'd broken the news to us and then we'd bought our tickets then proceeded to go downstairs and look for the card. The guy came out and opened up the machine and to our dismay, the card was gone. Then some guy and his wife came running over, saying they'd found the card and would've bought us our ticket's himself after seeing we'd been rejected! Nice of him to offer, but it would have been more useful about half an hour earlier
So eventually we all had our tickets and were all set to go in, when one of my friends thought he'd lost his ticket! Thankfully we found it and into the theatre we went, which to our complete surprise was rather empty and we got possibly the best seats in the house.
Now, for the real reason for this blog - the review.
I knew this film was filmed completely hand held and I thought that that was going to annoy me. However it didn't and really added to the overall feel of the film. It simply wouldn't have been nearly as good if it had been filmed without the jerkyness of hand held camera.
I think it was set up quite well at the start, stating that the government had found the tape we were about to watch at the area previously known as Central Park.
It spends about the first half hour setting up characters and back story and then launches into full scale mayhem.
It basically follows the story of a group of friends tryin to escape new york city as a monster attacks.
As soon as the head from the Statue of Liberty came rolling down the street, I knew it was going to be good.
Being filmed hand held and all, the film lent itself to some interesting camera work.
The acting was quite good, particularly I'd say on the part of Hud, the guy carrying the camera all the time, seen as most of his emotion had to be in his voice as he wasn't really on screen all that much.
It was just the right amount of scary I think and the death and goryish bits were believable.
It also had some funny bits, the most memorable for me both coming from Hud:
Rob, it is time to leave the electronics store
and
I just keep thinking how scary it would be if a flaming homeless guy came running out.

One thing that I liked about this film was the lack of soundtrack. Obviously, it was meant to be realistic so it wouldn't have a soundtrack, but I didn't think about that until I got there. The lack of score meant that you one didn't know when the frights were coming and two what you were supposed to be feeling [relief, fear, anger] wasn't dictated to you by music.
Now, the monster. After waiting ages to see the film and then all of the fiasco trying to get in, I was really looking forward to seeing this monster. And I hate to say it, but I'm still not sure what it actually was. The film was lacking in proper shots of the monster, but when viewed from above in the helicopters, it looked like it was crawling, like a lizard??
I wish they'd said a bit more about the monster and shown a bit more of it. Aside from that, a totally kick arse film!
And another bit of good news, I think a sequel would work well! They've left so much unanswered that it's pretty much open to have another at least one film.
That about wraps this up.
Tell me if you think the same, differently or whatever.
Until Next Time,

Megz
