Last night my friends and I headed out to go see the film Mamma Mia. Being big ABBA fans we were really looking forward to it. So,ridiculously priced snacks in hand,we entered the screen and sat down to enjoy ourselves
This movie has got to be the ultimate feel good film of the year. It's camp, romantic, hilarious and full of singing and dance sequences that have you singing along and then singing all the way home too.
The cast were great, although admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of Pierce Brosnan or Colin Firth but I did think they fitted their roles well in this film. Meryl Streep was excellent and I really felt for her character when she was dressing up Sophie to get married and singing about how she was losing her.The supporting cast were hilarious - Julie Walters being the funniest. She was just fantastic,my favourite performance of the film by far.
The singing was mediocre. I was pleasantly surprised by Meryl Streep's voice and she done a good job. Amanda Seyfried's voice sounded more trained,if that makes sense, than the others and I think that took away from the sing along quality that the other songs had.The male cast members were ok at carrying their songs. But Pierce Brosnan, well, lets just say singing lessons would be a good investment.
The backdrop of a Greek island was beautiful and added to the magical quality that this film has. Good use was made of the space and there were many breath taking shots included in the film that showed off the stunning beauty of the place.
Overall, this film was most enjoyable.A must for any
ABBA fans and the ultimate in feel good films.Yes it's cheesy [particularly Pierce Brosnan as he tries to woo Meryl Streep with an ABBA song under the guise of a straight face
], Yes there's a couple of holes here and there. But it's a fun, camp, musical phenomenon and I loved it from start to finish!
9/10 on all counts
Until Next Time
