  • August Round Up

Yet another month gone by - and what an eventful one it has been!A party,a wedding, exam results, darren shan at the book festival plus back to school as a senior.Lots to report this month so sit back and relax - it's gonna be a long one!

    Exam Results

I was utterly shocked to find out my exam results on the fifth of this month.I wasn't expecting results anywhere near as good as I achieved. To my pleasant surprise I've come away from my standard grades with seven 1's and a B for Int. 2 Media studies!I refused to believe it at first, but now that it's sunk in,I'm very pleased, although I don't feel I deserve those results as I put in minimum effort during exam time,as I've written before.I'm not complaining though!

    Gemma and Kirsty's Sweet Sixteenth

What an excellent night this was!The birthday girls were looking fabulous - curly hair, gorgeous summery dresses and big beautiful smiles. The food was pretty darn good aswell,I discovered I like cherries.Much dancing and fun was had, then came the cake - and my,my what a cake. Finally some late night sing star antics before all the rest of the guests left leaving us lot [me,kirsty, gemma, jamie, nicole] to enjoy the rest of the night in the form of a sleepover. Some interesting games [including pass the orange - which did NOT go well] were played and then we settled down with some nicely prepared Cosmopolitans, after which me and Jamie enjoyed the vodka and irn bru :)) Then it was hot chocolate and movie time and finally me and Jamie (ever my late night partner at sleepovers) dozed off around six.It was an excellent night - the best birthday bash I've ever been to by far.

    The Wedding

My close friend Gemma's parents finally got married this month - after twenty years of being together! It was a beautiful day [a pleasant surprise after the fortnight or so of rain that had come before it!] The ceremony took place at Craigmiller Castle and the reception at The Orwell Lodge.I wore a red dress and finally got my hair piece to go in right - so for once I felt really good about the way I looked :). Gemma and her mum looked absolutely stunning - Gemma in brown and her mum in a simple but beautiful ivory dress.I managed to embarrass myself at the meal though. The desert came and then the waiters brought out jugs with white stuff in it,which I presumed was cream.I happily poured it all over my cake before the waiter told me 'Thats the milk for the coffee'.I was mortified, although I do feel it was an easy mistake to make! The reception was great - all of mine and Gemma's friends from church and school came.Everyone looked absolutely gorgeous! We danced the night away and my feet were ready to fall of by the end of the night. It's been a week now and still the blisters haven't gone away!A great day :]

Darren Shan at The Edinburgh Book Festival

One of my favourite authors is master of teenage horror,Darren Shan.I've loved his books ever since reading Cirque De Freak when I was around eleven and have bought everything he's written ever since. My friend Ashton is also a big fan and we've made it a thing to go see him each year at the book festival. His events are always excellent - he generally reads out extracts that nobody else in the world has heard before at the festival,so it's always worth going as its a new and fresh act each year. This year, the extracts were great again - he read out something from Wolf Island [the upcoming book] and then from the one due to be released after that, although he wouldn't reveal the title of it.Then there was an interesting question and answer session before he wrapped things up with another extract - this time from the series that is to follow the Demonata,a four book series about one of my favourite characters from his first series - Mr. Crepsley. We didn't go to get our books signed as the queue was massive, but a great event and I much enjoyed it.

    Back To School

I started back at school last Wednesday and so far it's been really hard work. We're seniors now,in our last two years of secondary education and I must say,we are being treated quite a bit differently by the teachers.Lessons are more left to you taking your own notes and you're much more left to your own devices - which I like. I'm taking English, maths, history, drama and media studies - all at higher. So far, drama has been really stressful as we've been writing the scripts for our shorts which are to be performed on the 11th of September - not far away at all!English is pretty good. We're studying Othello aswell as our personal study books, mines is Memoirs of A Geisha.Media is the same as always - relaxed and interesting.Maths is quite hard and history is alright.I think I'm going to enjoy my subjects, but it's going to be a lot of hard work.Hopefully though, this time next year,I'll be able to tell you all about how well I've done in my highers!

    Films

    I seen a few this month - 3 in the cinema,1 on tv,1 borrowed and 6 bought.

    Cinema

The Mummy Three:Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor - What a complete and utter waste of time and money. Wooden acting, awful script, predictable plot.Truly awful.

Wild Child - Predictable but fun. With solid performances and good humour, this is well worth a watch.

The Strangers - Very, very creepy and thrilling horror.Liv Tyler delivers a good performance and after hearing her screams I find it exceedingly hard to believe she suffered from tonsillitis throughout the shoot.Lots of good jumpy moments and the masks are just terrifying. It's got a few holes and I feel there could be more to it,but aside from that I have only one complaint:It's WAY too short.

    Tv

The Prestige - Very, very clever. Good performances from the entire cast - Michael Caine in particular. It's chock-a-block of magic, twists, clones, twins and everything else you could think of.You'll be confused if you don't watch until the end though - and you'll not see the ending coming,or at least I didn't.Is thought provoking and very enjoyable to watch.Just make sure your brain's switched on before you do.

    Borrowed

Reservoir Dogs - To be honest, although I enjoyed it,I feel its completely over rated. It was worth watching and I will of course buy it,but I do feel its been completely over rated.A slight let down if I'm honest.

    Bought

Seven - Interesting piece of work.I love Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman, and Brad Pitt delivers a performance which made me warm to him slightly.Shocking and tense, this one had me on the edge of my seat until the end - and oh my goodness what an ending!

Pretty Persuasion - Dark, dark, comedic drama. Is quite hard going but at times very, very funny. It has a lot to say about schools, teenagers and twisted bitches.Evan Rachel Wood is fantastic,as always,as are the supporting cast.Definately worth a watch,if you don't mind films that are NOT intended to bring your mood up.

St. Trinians - Loved it in the cinema.I felt the time was nigh to add it to my dvd collection. So add it I did. It's as funny as it was the first time round,Russel Brand still being the highlight for me,as little as he's in it. :]

Bring It On - This film remains my favourite film in the developing 'dance' genre.Eliza Dushku is one of my favourite actresses and I really just enjoy this film every time I watch it.There's not much to say really,it's one of those guilty pleasures of mines.

Knocked Up - Hilariously funny with hours of great special features.Crude as it is in parts,it just makes me laugh. But then again,I loved the 40 Year Old Virgin aswell so go figure.

Planet Terror - Utterly fantastic,action-packed gore.NOT for the faint of heart, this film is Robert Rodriguez's half to his and Quentin Tarantino's 'Grindhouse' [Tarantino's half being the fantastic 'Deathproof'].Not to be taken seriously - just get some popcorn, turn the lights off and enjoy the cringing and completely unapologetic ride.

I also seen The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia again in the cinema this month - as excellent the second time as they were the first.

    Tv

The Kevin Bishop Show - I was let down by this.I like Kevin Bishop so was hoping it would be a bit funnier. It's very repetitive.

The Tudors - Loved the first season, the second is just as excellent.Jonathan Rhys Meyers is as great as ever as King Henry VIII and although he is portraying a bastard of a character,he still manages to make me like him, which says something.

Big Brother - Mikey to win! He's the most genuine housemate in there without a doubt.I'm gutted that Lisa went last night, although glad she left with twenty five thousand pounds.

X Factor - The auditions are always the best part, forever making me laugh. But why is Dannii still a judge - she's crap!

    Overall

Overall this month has been excellent, one of my favourite this year.In the coming month I have a trip to London planned,my sixteenth birthday and my first drama performance to look forward to dread. Wish me luck.

    Until Next Time

P.S - Sorry about the length of this,I've been busy :))

  • Wild Child Review

This was the last 'hurrah' of the summer holidays. My friends and I went to see it a couple of nights before school went back, and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Lets get this straight - I'm not the worlds biggest chick flick fan. I own quite a few, and there's the odd one that gets me,but in general,I prefer other stuff.

This film won't be winning any prizes for depth or originality, but there is some fun to be had.

Good performances overall - Emma Roberts is quite a promising talent and the supporting cast fleshed out characters that could have been very two dimensional and boring. My favourite performance however comes from Shirley Henderson who plays the rather scary Matron.

The plot is pretty predictable, nothing special in terms of originality.

However, the script did deliver a lot of funny one liners as well as some touching bonding moments. It had a little more edge to it than your typical teen flick, which I liked.

One thing I would have liked to have seen however,is a bit more of Holly's life in LA,as it felt the opening was over very quickly.

So,if you're up for a bit of not very serious fun, give it a go.There's lots of smiles, good humour and an easy to follow plot which should make for a fairly decent evening of entertainment.

    Until Next Time

  • The Mummy:Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor Review

Usually I go into details when reviewing a movie, but this just isn't worth the time.I only saw it on Tuesday and I already have very dim memories of what is a truly awful film. The first two were fun, witty, action filled movies, although nothing special. This is just bad on a completely different level. If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the film.Nothing extra of any importance happens. The acting was terrible, the plot predictable and the jokes cheesy.Don't waste your time.

  • Stating The Obvious

I was watching,or rather my dad was watching and I was present,an episode of Top Gear the other day.During said episode Richard Hammond was locked in a car and the car was dumped in a tank of water.

They said before he locked up in the car that more deaths by drowning had occurred over the past X years due to cars crashing and falling into water than on boating lakes.

    And I thought:

Well yes,as boats do tend to float

  • July Round Up

July has been an average month.I've spent many days doing nothing which has left me a bit bored.I got a volunteering position in Barnardos Bookshop which has had me out of the house one day a week and I've also taken quite a few trips to the cinema this month, which has been great. And a few day trips with my friends also.My hair piece finally arrived this month - after 15 weeks of waiting! However,I've not actually used it properly yet because me and my mum got into an argument about it and I refuse to go back and ask her for help. It's a pride thing :(.So,I'm gonna have to get working on putting it in myself before I go back to school.

    Films

Ok so this month I've been a frequent visitor to the cinema, seeing four films in total.I've also invested in four new films and enjoyed a couple on the movie channels on tv.So here we go.

    Cinema

The Chronicles of Narnia:Prince Caspian - A total let down compared to the first film.Wooden acting, repetitive storyline and predictable ending.Read my complete review for more

Mamma Mia! - Fantastic.Feel good film of the year.Good cast and bearable singing, apart from Pierce Brosnan.I thoroughly enjoyed it.Read my complete review for more.

Angus,Thongs and Perfect Snogging - VERY,VERY cheesy. But a once you get over that, its a bit of fun.Very predictable, very cringe worthy fun.Read my complete review for more.

The Dark Knight - Absolute must see.My favourite film of the year by far.I cannot stress enough how much this must be seen in the cinema.Heath Ledger delivers a fantastic performance and the script delivered a dark, tense tale with just the right amount of wit.Read my complete review for more.

    Bought

Across The Universe - An artsy musical that makes use of the legendary music by the Beatles.Utterly fantastic. They didn't kill the songs which was a plus and the acting was good.A great film.

Evan Almighty - Seen it in the cinema and liked it so decided to buy it.A bit of fun and Steve Carrel hilarious as always.

From Hell - Another Johnny Depp addition to my collection.A tale of Jack The Ripper.Gory and frightening. An excellent piece.

Deathproof - I rented this film a while back and loved it so decided now was the time to add it to my collection.I loved it just as much on my second viewing as I did on my first. It has an amazing soundtrack and its explosive, action packed and just great in general.

    Tv

187 - A film starring Samuel L. Jackson about the hostile environment of some schools.Directed by a teacher it tells the tale of a substitute teacher who, having been previously stabbed by a pupil, relocates to a school in LA.He encounters ridicule and violence at the hands of his pupils.A scary and intense dramatic thriller.Opens your eyes to a few things.Well worth a watch.

Slither - Hilarious horror-comedy.I must admit the reason I watched it was because it starred Nathan Fillion and he's slowly becoming one of my favourite actors, but afterwards,I was very glad that I'd chosen to watch it.Think Shaun of The Dead with aliens and you'll be there. Some hilarious one liners and a utterly ridiculous situation made for an evening of gory fun for me.

    Tv

Big Brother - Continues to be rubbish.I don't like any of the housemates other than Lisa and Mikey any more so fingers crossed one of them wins.

Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog - Ok so this technically wasn't a tv programme but it was only 40 minutes long so I can't class it as a film. For those of you who don't know, this was the latest creation by Joss Whedon.A hilarious musical masterpiece that's got me aching for Dollhouse to hurry up and be ready :))

    Quotability

Mayor [Slither] - Have you ever seen anything like that?Have you ever heard of anything like that?Me neither and I watch animal planet all the time!

Mayor [Slither] - Martian's a general term meaning from outer space fucker!

Bill [Slither] - Well now, that is some fucked up shit.

Kirsty - Was that a jib at Gemma's paleness?

    Me/Gemma - Cross Continental Communication

    Gemma - You said ditto
    Kirsty - Aye,but then I said jinx

Kirsty - A half to the top of the mountain please

    Kirsty - Die bitch
    Me - What's that from?
    Kirsty - Bambi :))

Lorelai [Gilmore Girls] - Finger food AKA little balls of attitude.

    Daytrips

I've been on a couple of days out this month.Cinema trips aside,I've explored up town, visited IKEA and best of all taken a trip to the beach at North Berwick. Here's some pictures.

    Photobucket"

That day was a lot of fun.We went swimming, played volleyball and just generally had a good time.

    Overall

Overall,July was quite a good month.A little boring on the days I didn't do anything but good all the same. Its sad to think that by the time I do my next round up,I'll have been back at school for like a fortnight, got my exam results, been to a sixteenth birthday party and been to a wedding.Looks like it'll be a bit of a jam packed month!

    Until Then
